HOW TO SIGN UP FOR THE WORKSHOP

Read the information below, then register for the Free Citizenship Workshop here.

Once you submit you registration, Houston Legal Aid Center (HLAC) will:

    1. Confirm your legal requirements to apply for citizenship.
    2. Confirm that you have all supporting documents that are needed to apply.
    3. Assist you with filling out the citizenship application.
    4. Assist you with the USCIS Fee Waiver Request (for those who qualify for the waiver).
    5. Prepare and package all documents for you to mail to USCIS.

After you submit your online registration form (that you can access at the bottom of this page), an HLAC staff member will let you know what documents you are required to bring to the Citizenship Workshop. You will need to bring all requested documentation with you to the Citizenship Workshop on July 17.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL APPLICANTS

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a legal permanent resident for 5 years, or 3 years if married to U.S. citizen
  • Bring your social security card AND your permanent resident card AND a copy of the front and back of your resident card
  • Bring a list of your address(es) and job history for the last 5 years
  • Bring a list of ALL trips taken outside of the U.S. for the last 5 years
  • Bring family information for ALL children and spouses (current and former).
  • If you have ever been arrested, bring certificates of disposition for all arrests.

DO YOU NEED A FEE WAIVER?

To apply for a fee waiver:

    1. Bring your most recent income tax return.
    2. Bring proof of any public benefits you have received (Medicaid, food stamps, SSI).

If you do not qualify for the fee waiver, the USCIS fee is $725 payable to “US Department of Homeland Security.” You are not being charged attorney fees. Houston Legal Aid Center is providing free legal assistance for this workshop. However, you still must pay a $725 application fee to USCIS to submit your citizenship application if you do not qualify for the fee waiver.
